On June 24, 2007 the Angora Fire raced through the North Upper Truckee area of South Lake Tahoe, burning 3100 acres of forest and destroying 256 homes. As the firefighters finished extinguishing the fire the local community came together to support the fire victims emotionally and financially as the rebuilding process began.
After losing a home suddenly in a forest fire the process of starting over can be overwhelming. Most of the people who lost their homes had been happy in their little slice of paradise and had not thoughts about building a new home just a few days earlier. Predictably, most of them had only their insurance claim with which to rebuild.
Five of the Angora Fire victims came to David Goldman Environmental Architecture because they wanted to rebuild environmentally sensibly. They wanted comfortable, efficient, healthy and fire safe homes. None of them wanted to be in the position of having to rebuild, but if they had to they wanted to do it right. |
