Academic Projects

Academic projects are theoretical designs that were never intended to actually be constructed. The freedom from budgets and other factors that are essential to successfully built projects allows for experimentation in the design process. These designs are educational projects, competitions and other opportunities to explore architectural ideas and theories.

Experimentation with theories is essential to advancements in science and in art. The theories that are explored in academic projects lead to real world innovation.

Included here are ideas that explore the Architecture of Sustainability. Undertaken over a span of 16 years, these projects represent my evolving interest in sustainable design over my career.

Connecting Terminal Thesis project for Bachelor of Architecture, Rhode Island School of Design, 1986. This project explored the adaptive re-use of the iconic grain elevator structures.
Yin Yang Residence Individual exploration of Northern California building site, 1998. Investigation of the architecture of self sustainability.
Lisbon Arts Center Design project for Masters Degree, Energy & Environment Program, Architectural Association, London, 2002. A study of architectural integration of the environmental strategies.
